Keep It Simple When Healing From Trauma

Simple is almost always best when we’re trying to heal from trauma.

When we’re constantly in survival mode, our thinking brain goes offline, and we’re not functioning at our best mentally. That’s not a flaw, it’s how we were designed. Our nervous system is built to protect us.

When survival mode is activated, the brain’s priority becomes survival, not processing or understanding why something is happening.

So if you find yourself struggling to think clearly in those moments, remember this:

You’re not dumb.
You’re not stupid.

Your nervous system is simply doing its job and trying to protect you.

Why Simplicity Matters

This is why it’s important to keep things simple when you begin your healing journey. The simpler your tools are, the easier it will be to remember them when survival mode kicks in.

Trust me, I understand this personally.

I’m the kind of person who sometimes has to write myself a note just to remind myself to check my list for the day. I get it because I’ve lived it.

Start With Breathing

One of the most powerful things you can do when you start to spiral is focus on your breathing.

Breathing is incredibly important in healing. In many ways, it acts like a natural biological reset for the nervous system.

But here’s the truth:

You’re not always going to remember to breathe when things get intense—and that’s okay.

Healing is a practice.

The more you practice these tools, the more repetitions you get, and the easier they become to access when you need them.

Healing Is Like Learning a New Skill

Think about it this way:

If I asked you to start playing a sport you’ve never played before today, what would you expect?

You probably wouldn’t expect to be good at it right away.

But if you practiced consistently for six months, you’d likely become pretty good at it.

Healing from trauma works the same way.

You’re not always going to get it right. You’re not going to be perfect at using these tools in the beginning.

But every time you show up and try, every time you use a tool or simply get through the day, you’re making progress.

You’re learning.

You’re growing.

Give Yourself Grace

Don’t be so hard on yourself when things feel difficult.

Struggling is part of the process. It’s expected.

The difference now is this:

You’re not giving up on yourself anymore.

You’re going to keep showing up.

No matter what.

And that matters more than you realize.

Now is your time.

Stay positive and take action!
