“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” - Aristotle
We’ve all heard this quote a hundred times. It’s nothing new. But how many of us actually follow it?
How many of us are truly reviewing our habits, asking whether they support the person we want to become, and slowly replacing the ones that don’t serve us with ones that do?
Are you doing this now? Am I doing this now?
If it’s so simple, then why aren’t we doing it?
The answer is often: comfort, being stuck, shame, or fear.
Breaking free from habits that don’t support our growth takes reflection and intentional action.
Today, make it a point to take inventory of your habits:
How do you start your day?
How do you end your day?
What do you repeatedly do in between?
For example, if you spend an hour scrolling on your phone at night (no judgment here), what if you cut that time in half? Spend 30 minutes scrolling, and use the other 30 minutes journaling, meditating, or both.
Maybe you don’t even start with 30 minutes. Start small. But start.
“It’s too hard.”
Yes—it’s going to be hard. If you’ve been doing something for years, it will feel even harder to change. But here’s the good news: your brain is designed for this.
Thanks to neuroplasticity, your brain can create new neural pathways. All it takes is doing something different, consistently, to start building those new pathways.
Think about it this way:
If you’ve never thrown a football, swung a golf club, or taken a slap shot on skates, would you expect to do well the first time? Of course not.
Habits work the same way. Healing works the same way.
At first, you may not do well. You might not stick with it right away. And that’s okay.
Don’t give up on yourself. Don’t beat yourself up. Keep going.
Over time, those new neural connections will grow stronger. And with consistency, you’ll begin to see real change.
Excellence isn’t an act. It’s a habit.
Keep going.
Stay positive and take action!
