Reclaiming My Mindset After Trauma

“Once your mindset changes, everything on the outside will change along with it.” – Steve Marabodi.
Your mindset is your foundation.
It shapes how you view yourself, others, and the world.
But when trauma enters the equation, everything changes.
Changing your mindset sounds simple.
Be aware that a change is needed and go from there.
But if you’ve experienced trauma, you know that’s not how it works.
Trauma changes your mindset, both physically and psychologically.
After my trauma, I became a completely different person.
Something inside me broke.
It felt like the version of me I once knew, the one I wanted to be, got rerouted.
Like a detour in a construction zone, my brain redirected everything to one road:
Survival.
At first, I didn’t even know what was happening.
The abuse happened so fast.
I couldn’t understand why this man was doing this to me.
I was in shock.
Then something flipped inside me, a switch.
My brain knew I couldn’t process the pain, so it stepped in.
It took me somewhere else.
That place was dissociation.
Our brains are incredible, they protect us.
But what happens when the abuse happens again?
And again?
And again?
Eventually, your brain keeps you stuck in survival mode.
It becomes your new normal.
The survival pathways get stronger.
The old ones, the ones built for connection, trust, curiosity, and joy, fade away.
You live in constant alert.
Like you’re standing on the edge of a 100-story building
…with someone trying to push you off.
That’s the level of fear your body lives in, every day.
Whether the threat is real or perceived, your brain reacts as if it’s life or death.
Because to you, it is.
“Challenges are what make life interesting. Overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.” – Joshua J. Marine
Changing your mindset after trauma will be the greatest challenge you’ll ever take on.
And if you're in pain right now, you might think,
“I don’t want life to be interesting. I just want peace.”
But “interesting” doesn’t mean chaotic.
It means growing into the person you were always meant to be.
Not who you would’ve been if the trauma never happened.
But who you are becoming because you’ve chosen to heal.
When you begin healing, new opportunities start to appear.
Life gets interesting in a good way.
It becomes joyful again.
Most importantly, it becomes meaningful.
Healing rewires your brain.
You start to create new neural pathways.
You slowly prune away the ones built around fear, shame, and survival.
And over time, the world doesn’t feel like a threat anymore.
You start to feel safe in your own body.
You trust yourself again.
Shame fades.
Guilt lifts.
Condemnation dissolves.
Hope shows up.
You realize you can overcome your trauma.
Beneath all the layers of trauma is a fighting spirit.
You are capable of far more than you remember.
And healing will reveal that strength again.
You won’t just survive anymore.
You’ll thrive.
Stay positive and take action!
