In your own words, what does being overwhelmed mean to you?
Do you get overwhelmed often?
When we get overwhelmed, it means that we’ve reached our capacity. We feel that we’ve met our limit mentally, emotionally, or physically.
It’s a signal that our nervous system is overloaded; often due to stress, competing demands, unresolved trauma, or unmet needs.
For many years overwhelm would lead me to speeding up, becoming flooded, irritable, and eventually ruining my entire day.
It not only ruined my day, but it ruined the days of those around me as well.
I’ve developed a lot more self-awareness since I’ve started my healing journey, and I’m aware of when I’m becoming overwhelmed.
As I mentioned in previous newsletters, self-awareness is the first step towards healing or changing your identity.
You must be aware of it before you can not only stop doing it but change it.
I start to recognize the signs and use them as a trigger to stop and reevaluate what’s happening.
I recognize when I get overwhelmed now and I react differently.
I slow down, think about what needs to happen, prioritize what needs to happen, and put things in perspective.
When we slow down, take a deep breath, and put things in perspective we’ll see this and can calm down.
We can start to regain our focus on what’s important and let go of the things that are not important.
Take the time to answer the following questions and think about the moments where you’ve felt overwhelmed recently.
1) What situations or tasks tend to make you feel the most overwhelmed?
2) What emotions are underneath your sense of overwhelm (fear, guilt, pressure, helplessness)?
3) What boundaries could you set to protect your energy better?
4) If a close friend of yours felt like you feel right now, what would you tell them?
5) What is one small, manageable step you can take right now to move forward?
Next time you’re feeling overwhelmed, try this:
Inhale for 4 seconds
Hold for 4 seconds
Exhale for 4 seconds
Hold for 4 seconds
Repeat for 3-5 rounds
This calms your stress response and shifts you into a more grounded state.
Stay positive and take action!
