The Battle of the Small Things
Survivor to Thriver Coaching, LLC
It’s usually not the big things that throw us off every day, it’s the little things that we allow to turn into big things.
For example, I used to drive 50 miles one way to work four days a week, and the fifth day I got to work from home. One weekend, I discovered an oil leak in the car I usually drive.
The next morning, I noticed more oil on the cardboard I had placed under the car. I decided to drive it anyway, but five minutes down the road, my intuition kicked in. Something told me to turn around and take my truck instead. I listened this time and switched vehicles.
When I got to work and stepped out of my truck, I realized I had forgotten my wallet in the car at home. Panic mode started to creep in.
The thoughts came fast:
“I’ve got an oil leak.”
“I forgot my wallet.”
“What else is going to go wrong?”
This is how it starts. In the past, small incidents like this would have ruined my entire day.
When I stopped to zoom out, I realized:
The oil leak? Not ideal, but fixable. I have multiple vehicles and options.
Forgetting my wallet? Frustrating, but not a crisis. I don’t need it for work, and I’ll be fine driving home without it.
In reality, none of these things are a big deal.
But here’s the catch: when you’re dealing with trauma, stress, or survival mode, these little things can feel like huge problems. They can ruin your whole day if you let them.
That morning, I started going down that path, letting my thoughts convince me that the day was already ruined. But then I stopped myself.
Instead of meditating on negative thoughts, I chose:
Gratitude (I have options, I’m blessed).
Perspective (this isn’t life-ending).
Intention (I’m going to have a great day anyway).
By shifting my mindset, I took control of my day instead of letting small setbacks control me.
It’s not the big things that usually knock us off track, it’s the little ones.
We win or lose this battle in our mind. It happens in the moment, in the choice to recognize thoughts before they build negative momentum.
👉 When we react, we get stuck fighting fires.
👉 When we pause, recognize, and respond, we think clearly and move forward.
The battle is always with our thoughts and victory comes from choosing the response.
Stay positive and take action!
